The brief called for natural stone, concealed joinery, and a steam shower in the ensuite — all delivered within a fixed timeline around the client's schedule. A compact bathroom in a Neutral Bay apartment, renovated to feel considerably larger than its footprint. The design prioritised a full-height feature wall in honed basalt, a wall-hung vanity to clear the floor plane, and tapware in brushed nickel throughout. Every wet area is waterproofed to AS 3740. Membrane is applied, cured, and tested before any tile goes down. There are no shortcuts here — a failed membrane means a full strip-out.
The substrate is checked, levelled, and prepared to suit the tile and adhesive specified. Large-format tiles, natural stone, and herringbone patterns all require a correctly prepared base — this is assessed during scoping, not discovered on day one.
Layout is set out from the correct datum before any tile is cut. Adhesive selection, back-buttering requirements, grout joint sizing, and grout mix are all specified per material. Final grouting and cleaning is part of the scope — the bathroom is handed over finished, not almost finished.
Vanities, tapware, shower screens, mirrors, and accessories are coordinated against the tiling scope so rough-in positions, tile cuts, and fixture heights are all resolved before anything is fixed. This prevents the most common renovation problem — trades working against each other.
